Student Shop Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Laboratory and Technician Manager, the Senior Lead Technician is responsible to oversee the School of Engineering’s Design Laboratory and work to guide and support the Engineering students, staff, and faculty in their fabrication needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Oversee, supervise, and maintain the Engineering Design Laboratory
• Assist students, faculty, and staff with coursework & research projects
• Provide computer aided design consultation services
• Provide instrument and mechanical design services
• Design and Fabricate projects when necessary
• Oversee and assist all levels of project work: design, drafting, machining, & welding
• Recommend design & fabrication changes, prepare cost & time estimates
• Coordinate professor/faculty schedules as they pertain to use of the shop
• Responsible for shop budget, purchasing, machine maintenance, & replacement
• Responsible for day-to-day operation and safety of the teaching laboratory
• Determine shop necessities; source equipment, tooling, hardware & material
• Direct safety training and shop orientation for all students
• Maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification, C14 License, and any other certifications necessary to operate laboratory

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

• Proficiency in welding and soldering, specifically TIG
• Expertise in milling and turning both CNC and manual
• Knowledge of materials and their applications
• Demonstrable aptitude in CAD and CAM software

EDUCATION:

Undergraduate Degree in Engineering or Science required, Mechanical Engineering preferred

Rate - $38.00/hour
