Cooper Union Health Insurance

It is a requirement that all students (undergraduates who are registered for 6 or more credits and graduate students who are registered for 4.5 or more credits) have health insurance coverage. The Cooper Union provides health insurance for all students through our provider, Wellfleet

The total cost of insurance is automatically charged to the student's account in the Fall semester. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the annual cost is $3,719. If you do not plan to be enrolled for the full year, please notify the Office of Student Accounts at bursar@cooper.edu

New for Fall 2026: International & Exchange Students
Effective Fall 2026, all incoming International students (F-1 visa holders) and Exchange students are required to enroll in the Cooper Union Student Health Insurance Plan. External private insurance plans will no longer be accepted for these student groups.

  • Grandfathering Provision: International students who were active and enrolled prior to Fall 2026, and who successfully waived the insurance in a previous semester, may continue to waive coverage as long as their private insurance remains active and they maintain continuous enrollment.

Insurance Waivers
Domestic students covered under their own or a parent’s policy may choose to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan. The insurance provided must be currently active and is subject to eligibility verification through Wellfleet.

  • Waiver Process: Follow the instructions sent to your cooper.edu email from Wellfleet.
  • Fall Deadline: October 15
  • Spring Deadline: March 17

The 2026 – 2027 student health insurance plan will available in the Summer of 2026.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
