Cooper Union Counseling Services

Counseling Services at The Cooper Union are coordinated through the Office of Student Affairs. Our Student Care Coordinators, Cassandra Jolicoeur, and Elizabeth London, are here to meet with students to provide support and to discuss mental health and counseling needs. The Student Care team can be reached at studentcare@cooper.edu or by calling the office of Student Affairs at 212.353.4130. Our office is generally open Monday - Friday from 9 AM - 5 PM.

Our student care team will work with each student on an individual basis to connect them to the necessary care and supportive services.

We are currently partnered with local therapists who are available for support through talk therapy. Any student (currently enrolled in classes) seeking therapy can see any of our partner counselors, at no cost to them, for short-term therapy. We work with a variety of providers, such as art therapists, drama therapists, social workers, and psychologists who all have different backgrounds, identities, and ways of working with our students.

On this page, you can view our available counselors as well as information about each clinician’s area of focus and practice style. All of our counselors have independent schedules and availability may vary. When searching for a provider, we recommend reaching out to several individuals to see who has availability. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, some of our clinicians are only offering remote sessions. To find out who is available for in-person or remote sessions, please contact our clinicians directly. When you are ready to schedule with one of our partner counselors, you can reach out to them directly by phone or email.

Are you a creative person with high aspirations experiencing procrastination, perfectionism, and a hostile inner critic? Do you want to feel more free in your work or your relationships? Do you feel anxious or depressed and want to obsess less and laugh more? We will think together to figure out why you feel stuck, and how you will transform. We will collaborate to your unique strengths, using an eclectic approach.

I am a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist in the state of New York and received my Master's Degree from New York University in drama therapy. I completed post-graduate psychotherapy training at the Institute for Developmental Transformations, where I also served as Associate Training Director for three years. I worked at the School of Visual Arts as a psychotherapist and for 9 years worked at Bellevue Hospital in the department of psychiatry. I utilize empirically supported and embodied creative approaches to psychotherapy.

I believe we should all be free to love who we love, to identify in whatever way feels most natural to us, and I am honored to hold space for anyone who is questioning what is "right" for them. I am fortunate to have worked with individuals from many continents. I strive to be aware of the power and privilege I have in the therapy space. I invite dialogue and play to explore issues of cultural identity, race, class, trauma, and abuse of power.

My aim is to provide a safe and supportive space for you to begin articulating and moving towards what you want to do differently in your life. I use an approach called Solution Focused Therapy. My clients experience it as a hopeful, inspiring treatment due to the focus on strengths, resilience, hope, and solution building, rather than solely on pathology. It is my deep belief that we all have an innate ability to cope with and overcome areas of life that we find difficult. Together, with a keen focus on your unique situation, we will discover how you can tap into your inborn capacities to create the change and outcomes you are seeking.

I am a middle eastern, queer, woman who recognizes that we do not leave our social identities at the door before we enter therapy. Utilizing an intersectional, relational, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approach to counseling, I strive to create an empowering therapeutic environment for those who are marginalized and have been historically excluded from such spaces. Showing up can feel challenging but doing so is the first step to healing, resilience, and insight.

I work with adolescents, adults, and couples around various interrelated concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, self-worth, sexuality, gender identity, and monogamous/ethically non monogamous relationships. I received a dual master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University. Currently, I am pursuing post-graduate training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP), CSAB. I take great pride in prioritizing ongoing extensive training in psychodynamic and behavioral therapies, including CBT, DBT, RO-DBT. I have completed additional training in multicultural and racial considerations in therapy, microaggressions, treatment with TGNC patients, self-regulation, and sex therapy. I predominantly utilize a psychodynamic approach to not only reduce symptoms but also manage and understand the underlying issue. With that being said, our work will be tailored to your needs and strengths.

Through our work together, I will support you on your journey back to your authentic self. My goal is to empower you with the self-confidence and self-compassion to live a life that serves the most innate version of you, trusting that you are already whole and complete.

The act of putting thoughts and emotions into words can have surprising and powerful results. There is freedom in saying out loud—in a unique and confidential environment—what is only said to oneself, often quietly and without self-awareness.

When we allow ourselves to say what we have withheld, we begin to see our world from new perspectives, develop new ways of being in the world, and begin to make new choices. Therapy can be painful, slow, and arduous; this is part of why we undertake this process with an experienced therapist, someone to be in our lives for exactly and only this purpose.

This is how I understand my work. I see patients from a variety of backgrounds and diverse struggles. As a licensed psychoanalyst and graduate of the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, I work with each patient based on their individual needs as the relationship develops. I have experience with the LGBTQ+ community, college students, artists, and a variety of professionals. Through my years of practice, I've worked with depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms, stress and body dysmorphia, in addition to other issues.

I received my master’s degree in Mental Health & Wellness Counseling from New York University. In my therapeutic work thus far, I have worked with cisgender and non-binary individuals as well as couples who are tackling subjects like anxiety, depression, trauma, and questions surrounding their overall identity.  Aside from utilizing a psychodynamic approach, I also utilize narrative, multi-cultural, CBT, person-centered, and mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches that are directly connected to one’s intersectionality. Intersectionality is a conversation that I often bring within the therapeutic space with many of my clients as it helps us explore the multiple identities that encompass one whole. Each and every identity is an integral piece, and it is necessary to explore and honor each one.

I believe every person has the capacity to experience healing and growth, and the therapeutic relationship is a wonderful tool to assist in guiding you to the vulnerability and self-introspection needed to explore how and where this is possible. Getting to know yourself and your experiences more deeply through therapy, with honesty and compassion, can allow you to open up more space in your life for attunement, self-actualization, and delight.

I practice psychotherapy as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of New York. My clinical approach draws from a number of modalities including Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. My practice is trauma-informed, and also strongly influenced by feminist and postcolonial critical theory. I am particularly interested in working with clients navigating matters relating to LGBTQ identity, living with HIV/AIDS, having a West Indian/Caribbean cultural background, regulating moods and emotions, experiencing psychosis, and spirituality.

I am a clinical social worker licensed in NY, CT, and MA who sees clients in person and virtually from my office in the Flatiron/Union Square neighborhoods in Manhattan. I am an inquisitive, open-minded, and resourceful therapist who helps adult and adolescent clients address complex problems, foster a stronger sense of self, and gain a deeper understanding of their emotional and behavioral patterns. My approach is collaborative and compassionate, and I prioritize offering a private and confidential in-person space for clients’ healing and growth to begin. My practice specializations are in the areas of anxiety, depression, and self esteem issues, identity development and exploration, and navigating relationship issues and life transitions.

I deeply enjoy working with the student population, as well as people from all walks of life and backgrounds who have decided to make New York City their home (such as young professionals, creative entrepreneurs, and expats). I see my work as grounded in deep listening and forming a genuine, active and flexible working relationship with each of my clients.

In addition to my private practice, I am an advanced candidate in training in the Certificate in Psychoanalysis Program at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center (PPSC), and work serving student populations of all ages in counseling services at New York University. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Oberlin College and continued my studies at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, where I graduated with Honors with a Masters in Clinical Social Work.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
