What is gained by the government being shut down? The other day I heard a political commentator make an interesting comment. To paraphrase him he said we elect and send people to Washington to perform a simple job. Many of us do much more difficult work than politicians. There job is basically to keep the lights on... and they can't even do that.

who are you voting for if the election was held today and why? I'm thinking of sticking with Clinton because at least I know his weak points. I am also keeping an eye on what Perot's party has to offer, but i am sick of what the republicans have been doing in congress (pandering to the wealthy and special interests while slashing aid to students, the poor, and the elderly under the guise of balancing the budget)

Colin Powell better run as an indepedent because there is no way he would win the Republican nomination. His stance on abortion alone is enough to keep him from getting the nom. His middle of the road stance on other issues, like affirmative action and gun control would not help him either. However, if he ran as an independent and joined forces with another powerful independent like Ross Perot or Bill Bradley, he would have a very good shot at the presidency.
