NOTE: RULE 9 Addition:--
Any player who cannot make it for thurs 5pm in room 234 of Eng Bldg MUST
CONTACT OPPONENT OR ADMINISTRATOR and arrange suitable time of play.
THE PENALTY FOR NOT DOING THIS IS TO LOSE BY FORFEIT!!
But if opponent does not show up either then no one can claim victory.
1) The Cooper Union Chess Tournament is organized by the newly formed Cooper Union Chess Society. The purpose of this society is to promote chess and to help students improve their chess skills. The society and the tournament is open to anyone in the three schools at Cooper Union.
2) The Cooper Union Chess Tournament consists of 5 games for each player. Each player will play 5 different opponents ; playing one opponent each week.
NOTE NEW RULE:
DIV 1. ->The former division 1 champion can join this tournament from the
semifinals.
After each tornament player has had 5 matches, the top 3 scoring players and
the former champion will be in the semi-finals.
Each player in the semi-final will play the other 3, which means that each
semifinalist will have 3 matches, after which the top 2 will be the finalists.
DIVISION 2 --> There will also be a finals week
where the top two players in division 2 will play against each other.
The winner of each division after the finals week will receive a prize (yet to be determined)
3) There will be two divisions in this tournament: Division I and Division II. Most of the players in Division I are good players (USCF rating > 1400). Division II players are usually a little bit weaker thus giving some players a chance to win in this tournament without being a very good chess player. If you think you are being placed in a division which is not in your range, please notify the administrators as early as possible in the tournament. Winners of Division II are automatically promoted to Division I in future tournaments.
4) Each week, opponents will be assigned to each player for each match. This will be posted every Monday on the Sports & Recreation bulletin board section on the first floor. It will be also posted in Cooper Union Chess Society home page . 5) Generally, the matches will be held in Room 234E on Tuesday 12-2 pm and on Thursday during Club Hours (5-6 PM). However, if the players are busy during that time, the players can arrange to play their games anytime during that week and e-mail the results back to the administrators before the end of the week (i.e. Friday).
6) The players can play as many games as they want with each match. However, the player who wins more than the opponent will get 1 win for that match. If both players win the same number of games, each one will get a draw for that match.
7) The number of games and the time limits for each game is to be mutually agreed upon by the players. It is recommended that each match should consist of 1-3 games. The time duration for the entire match is recommended to be kept under 2 hours.
8) Currently, the Cooper Union Chess Society is trying to find funds to buy chess clocks and chess sets so that players don't have to bring in their chess sets. However, since we don't have sufficient chess sets now, the Cooper Union Chess Society is asking each player to bring in their chess sets (if they have one) especially on Thursday where the matches will generally be held.
9) IF ANY PLAYER IS NOT INTERESTED IN PLAYING IN THE TOURNAMENT FURTHER OR A PLAYER CAN'T FIND AN APPROPRIATE TIME TO PLAY THE OPPONENT FOR THAT WEEK, THE ADMINISTRATORS REQUEST THAT THE PLAYERS SHOULD NOTIFY THE OPPONENT AND/OR THE ADMINISTRATORS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
10) In order to qualify for the final rounds, a player must play at least 6 matches.
11) New players for the tournament will be accepted till the 3rd week of play. After the 3rd week , no additional players will be accepted to the tournament.
12) Finally, I wish you all will enjoy this tournament (if you happen to read up this far. :=)). And remember, this tournament is for fun and that's it. This set of rules may be amended in the future if necessary.
