Dr. Richard Stock

Dr. Stock is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and joined the Cooper Union in 1994. He received his PhD from West Virginia University in 1987 and was a Senior Research Associate at Carnegie Mellon University prior to coming to Cooper. In addition to being a faculty member at Cooper Union he spent five years as the Director of Outreach Programs for Cooper Union's engineering school. He is also responsible for the Engineering Professional Development Seminars, a series of seminars and workshops for Cooper engineering freshmen and sophomores. He is a co-founder and the Director of the CONNECT Program and oversees program development, evaluation and faculty liaison.

Dr. Stock began his career in England with, then, Price Waterhouse, later moving to British Petroleum Co. He returned to academia in the USA and during his time at Carnegie Mellon University was involved in research, technology transfer and a technology start-up company.

Dr. John Osburn

Dr. Osburn is the Associate Director of the CONNECT Program. As the Assistant Director of Cooper Union's Center for Writing and Speaking he was a co-founder of the original pilot communication program started with Dr. Stock in 1994. After an appointment as visiting faculty at Vassar College he re-joined Cooper to manage the CONNECT Program and supervise the program workshops and staff. He oversees the day-to-day running of the program including scheduling, training new facilitators, developing workshops and seminars and facilitating workshops himself. His broad experience in interdisciplinary work and scholarship includes journalism, performance studies, theater, and the adaptation of those fields to engineering education. He is an Instructor of Drama at New York University, where he earned his PhD in Performance Studies.

Margaret Araneo has taught theater, communication skills, and business-writing at several schools and colleges, including Baruch College, the CUNY Institute of Software Design and Development, the American Language Institute and the Gateway Acting School. As an actor, she has performed both nationally and internationally. She earned an MFA in Acting from Carnegie Mellon University/Moscow Art Theatre School and is a doctoral candidate in theater history at the CUNY Graduate Center.

La Tonya Borsay has an MFA in Acting from New York University and has extensive experience in adapting performance training techniques to the needs of non-theater students. She has been a Teaching Artist for the Roundabout Theater, Theater for a New Audience and the Career Education Center, where she specialized in the integration of Theater Arts with the core curriculum in New York City public schools. She is an active performer on stage and in television, including appearances in Law and Order: SVU and Born on the 4th of July.

Chris Clavelli has taught acting and communication at Long Island University, The School of Film and Television, Queens College, Marymount Manhattan College, Bard College, SUNY-New Paltz, The Directors Company and the Sande Shurin Studio. He is a veteran of over seventy professional acting and directing experiences in theater, television, film and commercial work. He earned a BFA from Emerson College and an MFA from the University of Alabama/Alabama Shakespeare Festival Actor Training Program.

Jim Elliott is Producing Director of Urban Empire, a theater production group. He teaches at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. He is an executive coach and personal speech coach, and has taught acting at Juniata College and Vermont Stage Company. An active director and actor, he holds a BA from Williams College and an MFA From the University of Texas-Austin.

Ellen Goldman is internationally recognized as a Certified Movement Analyst and has taught in the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies Certificate Program for many years. She is a trainer and practitioner of the Action ProfileĻ System, using it with individuals and groups. Human movement and communication has been her focus, with a particular emphasis on space. She is the author of As Others See Us: Body Movement and the Art of Communication and of The Geometry of Movement, a series of books and companion videos.

Elizabeth Kemler is a communication consultant. She is founder of Best-Effect, a business communications training and consulting company serving Fortune 1000 companies, non-profit organizations, and educators. At Cooper Union, she served as Assistant to the Director of the Center for Writing and Speaking. She has an extensive background in theater, radio and musical performance and holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College.

Deborah Latz is a jazz vocalist, writer, actor, and private vocal instructor. She is certified in Somatic Voicework and has coached students in theater and choreography at Brown University and at Public School153, as well as corporate executives. A recipient of the Best Actress Award at the Jerzy Grotowski Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, she attended San Francisco State University and holds certificates from the British American Drama Academy and the American Conservatory Theater. Her recent CD release, Toward Love, has received critical acclaim in the U.S., Europe, and Canada. Deborah has performed on tour in Canada and France and can be seen regularly at New York City jazz venues.

Cara Michelle Miller holds a BFA in Professional Acting from Eastern Carolina University and is a Certified Ohashiatsu Instructor. She has lectured and consulted in New York City and North Carolina. An accomplished artist and illustrator, she has also developed and taught a series of art lessons for children.

Eliza Ladd Schwartz earned a BA from Harvard University and is a Certified Teacher of the Body Dynamics method of movement training. She has integrated theater into a variety of non-theatrical educational settings, including public school social studies courses and adult literacy programs. The recipient of a Franklin Furnace Emerging Artist grant, she has extensive experience in Off-Broadway performance and independent film and video.

Alan Wolf is a Professor of Physics at the Cooper Union and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He was appointed as Special Master in the Silicone Breast Implant Litigation for the New York and multidistrict cases. Consequently, he has had extensive experience in the area of expert witness testimony.

Irwin Appel is a graduate of The Juilliard School and has a wide experience in Off-Broadway and regional productions as an actor and as a director. He has taught acting and professional skills at a range of institutions and is currently an Associate Professor of Acting at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Amanda Barrett was Assistant to the Director of the Center for Writing and Speaking. She has taught classes and workshops at New York University and Cooper Union, and is an experienced conference presenter and organizer. She holds degrees in Theater and Performance Studies from Barnard College and New York University.

Kathryn Blume has taught numerous workshops and classes in public speaking, career development and theater. Venues have included Women in Communications in Albuquerque, N.M., University of Vermont Summer Discovery Program and Vermont Stage Company in Burlington, Hill Actors' Retreat in Charlotte, Va., and the National High School Institute in Evanston, Ill. She holds a BA in Theater and Environmental Studies from Yale University.

Susan Jonas earned a doctorate from Yale School of Drama and has extensive experience in teaching performance and directing. She has numerous directing, production, dramaturgy, and publication credits, and was a Resident Director at New York Theater Workshop. She is a Theater Program Officer with the New York State Council for the Arts and was an early consultant on the CONNECT Program.

Mark Nash has taught at Long Island University, Burlington College, University of Vermont, Olympic College, and National High School Institute. He has been a video production coach, taught acting to non-actors, and facilitated a workshop in "Public Speaking: Relaxation and Vocal Techniques" at the Southern California Attorney's Conference. He is currently Artistic Director of the Vermont Stage Company and holds a BFA in Acting from the University of California-Irvine.

George Tinnin is a faculty member of Audrey Cohen College School of Business in NYC. He is also the principal of Affiliated Management Consultants dealing with organizational development, human resources management and training, project management and marketing. He has considerable experience in conflict resolution and has also faciltated workshops in the Cooper Union Engineering Professional Development Workshop and Seminar Series.

Alyssa Dodson is movement instructor for conductors, instrumentalists and opera singers at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center. She has taught dance, movement and related subjects for New York University, White Cloud Studio, Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre, Pilobolus Teaching Project, Interlochen Dance Academy, and Ballet Theatre Pennsylvania. As a dancer, she has performed with the Mark Morris, Martha Graham, FischerSpooner, Pilobolus, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and Pascal Rioult companies.

Leah Garland is a PhD in Performance Studies at New York University and has been an actor /dramaturg at New Works, NYC. She has taught acting, public speaking and writing at New York University, Hofstra University, New School University, and New York Film Academy. She has performed extensively in film and in theater and recently branched into directing at the Riant Theater in NYC. Garland joined the theater faculty at SUNY Genesse in 2005.

Carl Selinger is an alumnus of the Cooper Union and a former Manager of Aviation Business Development at the Port Authority in New York. He has had considerable experience in industry, particularly in the area of negotiation and is currently an engineering consultant. His course, "Stuff you don't learn in engineering school," has been given to professional engineers nationally and abroad. Teaching credits include Pace University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, City College of New York, and the Cooper Union.

Konnelle Stone has conducted presentation workshops for radio DJs, corporate sales personnel, and the general public. She was formerly Workshop Coordinator and Project Developer for the Institute for Relationship Therapy in New York and is associated with the Michael Chekhov theater studio. She earned a BFA From New York University's Circle in the Square Conservatory and completed three summers of study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She served as Co-Artistic Director of World Stage Productions in Paonia, Colorado.
