program
characteristics
The CONNECT Program was developed to enhance the communication skills of engineering undergraduates and, also, to address issues of logistics and implementation in a new way. This has increased its effectiveness and gained acceptance from the faculty, students and administration. CONNECT is not a course - the program enhances the existing curriculum. It provides a foundation of communication skills that students and faculty may build upon through practice and experience. CONNECT grows with the students as they mature and learn more about the demands of their chosen profession. CONNECT is non-judgmental - indeed, CONNECT is not for grade or credit. Workshop participants are encouraged to explore their own natural abilities as communicators. CONNECT does not promote one "correct" way of effective communication. CONNECT focuses on the behavioral aspects of effective communication. Development of accurate content and technical expertise is left to the engineering curriculum proper. CONNECT is experiential - participants learn for themselves and/or from each other under the guidance of facilitators. CONNECT is intensive - focused, planned application of the workshop/experiential approach leads to a significant learning process in a relatively short timeframe. CONNECT demonstrates life-long learning in its very structure. The program deals with effective communication from the premise that it is a continuing, daily aspect of an engineer's professional life. CONNECT is linked to courses throughout the curriculum in all majors. CONNECT is an Engineering School program. CONNECT is directed by an engineering faculty member. |
