Department of Chemistry

Albert Nerken School of Engineering

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art

We welcome you to the Cooper Union Department of Chemistry!

The faculty of the Chemistry Department are directing projects which range from pure research to engineering-oriented applications and the development of patentable devices, processes and software. Students from all of the engineering disciplines at Cooper Union (especially chemical engineering) carry out research in our department and take some of our numerous basic and advanced courses in chemistry. Every summer we also welcome a number of advanced high school students to join our research efforts through the Cooper Union Research Internship Program. We also work with students and teachers in local elementary, middle and high schools to help catalyze their interests in science and engineering.

The Chemistry department maintains a state-of-the-art instrument facility. Analytical instruments available for student use and instruction in our Instrumental Analysis Laboratory include: Raman, NMR, GC/MS, HPLC/UV-Vis, GC/FT-IR, FT-IR, and AA spectrometers. In our Computational Chemistry Laboratory, we maintain a cluster of networked Silicon Graphics, Linux, Windows and Macintosh workstations for molecular modeling and scientific visualization.

Our creative, talented and highly motivated staff is available to help the students and faculty with their work and provide the resources necessary for success in all departmental activities.
