Donald Meeker Background: In 1985 he formed Meeker & Associates. In 2003 he completed the design of the National Park Service wayfinding and visitor information standards. His firm is currently designing new signage standards for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, site signage and regional wayfinding for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Presidential Library, and has developed wayfinding programs at Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. He ini- ated and has managed the applied research study with the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute on Legibility and the Aging Driver. Awards: Don is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant with the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers to design the recreation symbol signs. Mr. Meeker has received many awards for his work from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, Print Casebooks, and twice received the Federal Award for Design Excellence from the National Endowment for the Arts. He was the recipient of the Oregon Achievers Award for public contributions to the state. In 2003 he received the Honor Award from the SEGD for the development of environmental graphic standards for the National Park Service. Publications: Articles on Don’s work have recently appeared in national design publications and in the general press, including I.D.(International Design), Print, Wired, Creative Review, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Peer reviewed research papers on legibility and type design by Donald Meeker have been pub- lished by the National Academy of Sciences, Transportation Research Record, and Ergonomics in Design, the Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Prior Experience: Born in Portland, Oregon he has worked on urban design projects throughout the country, first as a Vista Volunteer, then as an urban planner for Washington (D.C.) Planning and Housing Association, and the National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs. From 1979 to 1985 he was a senior designer and associate at Danne & Blackburn, during which time he designed the graphic standards programs for the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration, and managed many corporate and institutional design projects. Education: Donald Meeker received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon and Master's degree in graphic and industrial design from Pratt Institute. Public Service: Don was active in representing the American Inst. of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) in the creation of the ATA Guidelines for Airport Signing and Graphics. He is also a SEGD delegate to the U.S. Architectural & Transportation Compliance Board; the NEA advisory panel to improve federal design; the Village of Larchmont Board of Architectural Review (former, 8 yrs); the American National Standards Inst. Z-535 committee (former, 8 years); and the Transportation Research Board advisory committee on the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The water safety stan- dards he developed for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers are credited with reducing drowning deaths by seventy five percent, or 375 lives each year for the past thirteen years. The Meeker-developed ClearviewHwy® Typeface System was adopted in 2004 by the Federal Highway Administration as part of its efforts to improve road safety for aging drivers.
