Green Roof One of the most innovative features of Cooper Union’s new academic building, the Green Roof is an architectural union of aesthetics, economics, and ecology. Visible from the eighth floor, its deck surface is covered by a layer of low-maintenance plantings, which help to reduce city "heat island" effect, stormwater runoff, noise, summer air conditioning cost, and winter heat demand. Adhering to LEED specifications for sustainable design, the roof can have positive effects on the well-being and health of the building’s occupants and neighbors. The Green Roof represents an appreciation of plant biology, hydraulic engineering, and environmental responsibility, providing valuable educational opportunities for students, as well as rare open space in the heart of Manhattan. $2 Million Atrium and Grand Stair |
