Reverse Osmosis

Although no longer a "new" technology for chemical engineers, membrane technology and its chemical engineering applications is a thriving, growing field. A fundamental illustration of a membrane technology is reverse osmosis.

In this experiment desalination is used to demonstrate the principles of this separation process by investigating the affects of feed pressure and feed solute concentration of the reverse osmosis module performance.

Measuring the affects of feed pressure and solute concentration on the performance of a reverse osmosis module provides data for determining the mass transfer coefficients that characterize the unit and the osmotic pressure differences across the membrane.
