Filter

Filtration is a primary process for the separation of solids and liquids. Suspended solids are retained by a porous medium or screen allowing the cleared liquid to continue flowing. Although a seemingly basic concept the mechanisms of filtration are complex and design and modeling of filtration systems is not trivial.

In this experiment a small production-scale filter is modeled by characterising some its key operational parameters.

The filtration experiment consists of a plate and frame filter separating marble dust from a water slurry at constant feed pressure. The perfomance of the filter is characterized by analyzing the filtrate flow versus time to determine the specific cake resistence and the degree of compressibility.
