Liquid/liquid extraction is an energy efficient process for purifying one liquid by exploiting a solute's preferential solubility in another immiscible solvent. This approach may substitute for distillation as a more energy-attractive process or, indeed, when distillation is unaccepatble when heat-sensitive materilas are involved.

This experiment investigates the fundamentals of liquid/liquid extraction including the determination of partition coefficients and subsequently the mass transfer characteristics of a liquid/liquid extraction column.
