Materials will be discussed in the first class. Students should bring soft vine and compressed charcoals, erasers, tape, 1-3 sheets of charcoal paper and the $15 (cash) semester model fee to the first session.

Soft Dry Pastels
Rembrandt 90 or 60 half-stick or larger full-stick set (landscape or portrait)—most widely available artist-grade, recommended for beginner and experienced
Grumbacher, Durwent, Holbein—other comparable brands
Art Spectrum, Schmincke, Unison, Sennelier, Rowney, Townsend—softer and very lush, but more expensive and temperamental; not recommended for beginner
Nupastel, conte—harder and will not layer as much but useable for sketching

Paper: 1-3 sheets per class
Charcoal/Pastel (white, bright, dark, light, brown/gray colors)
Watercolor, coldpress (medium) or no press (rough) (white or can be painted before class)
Printmaking paper (white or can be painted before class)

Number of sheets of paper will vary depending on individual's work pace.
Artist-grade paper brands widely available include Arches, Strathmore, Rives, Fabriano, Canson, Lana, Saunders. Paper sizes will vary, but some standard sheet sizes are 19" x 24", 22" x 30" and larger. These can be used full size or divided into smaller sheets.

Additional Materials:
Soft rag or chamois (to blend and remove colors)
Small soft brush, cotton swabs or cardboard stumps (to make changes in small areas)
Single-edge razor blade, artists' tape and pushpins

Optional Materials:
Watercolor (to color printmaking and watercolor papers prior to use with pastel)
Weber Blue Label reworkable fixative (to build layers of pastel and to preserve work)
Glasseine (to preserve work)
Foamcore or cardboard portfolio (to use as a drawing board and portfolio)
Latex or non-latex gloves (to protect hands)

Manufacturers listed above provide professional-grade materials that are widely available. Other brands may be substituted.
