WHERE IS COOPER UNION LOCATED?

The Cooper Union is located in the East Village, north of NOHO and minutes from Washington Square and Tompkins Square Parks. The studios are located in the college's historic landmark Foundation Building, situated at the crossroads of Third and Fourth Avenues. The street address is: 7 East 7th Street at Third Avenue (please note: the mailing address differs and is listed below).

WHY SHOULD I TAKE PART IN THE COOPER UNION SCHOOL OF ART SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAM?

The program is ideally suited to emerging artists who seek a focused period of time with their ongoing artwork, an outlet for interaction with other artists, and critical feedback. The program exposes residents to key artworld figures and provides optional seminars and events that enrich beyond studio pursuits. Residents will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in New York at Cooper Union.

WHY SHOULD I NOT TAKE PART IN THE COOPER UNION SCHOOL OF ART SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAM?

The program is not suited to artists accustomed to a supervised studio practice. The program does not provide structured courses or full-time instructors, but rather, optional seminars and critiques by visiting artists and scholars. While Cooper Union would consider admitting undergraduate students, these candidates would need be of exceptional merit and sophistication, able to self-direct and work independently.

HOW MUCH DOES THE PROGRAM COST?

Tuition is $3,800. Housing is $1,200. The total program cost with housing is $5,000.

IS THE SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAM CREDIT BEARING?

No academic credit is awarded for the program.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Please send the following materials to the mailing address listed above by March 21, 2008:
· a completed application form
· a non-refundable application fee of $25.

· a resume
· a one-page statement of purpose detailing what you plan to work on while at Cooper Union and what you aim to accomplish during your residency here. (For printmaking and photography, please discuss what equipment and processes you plan on utilizing.)
· 10-20 images in the form of slides or a digital portfolio (labeled with date, medium, size)
· a self addressed stamped envelope, adequate in size and postage for return of your materials
· a self addressed stamped postcard for acknowledgment of receipt of materials

CAN I APPLY ONLINE?

No. We are not currently able to process online applications.

DO I NEED TO HAVE STUDIO ART EXPERIENCE?

Since the program is self-directed, residents must be accustomed to working independently on their artwork. Residents may be self-taught, and are not required to possess a degree of higher education.

DO I NEED TO BE ENROLLED IN A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY TO PARTICIPATE?

Residents do not need to be enrolled in another college or university. The program is not intended for undergraduate study.

DO I NEED TO BE A U.S. CITIZEN TO PARTICIPATE? IF NOT, WHAT VISAS, ETC. ARE REQUIRED?

No. Residents may enroll from abroad. Upon acceptance, you will be contacted as to what visas, etc. may be required. In most instances, a tourist visa will suffice. For more information please see: http://www.unitedstatesvisas.gov/

DO I NEED TO RESIDE IN ON-CAMPUS HOUSING IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAM?

No. Residents may reside off-campus and still participate in the program. Since the residence is situated across the street from the studios, it is a highly recommended option for its convenience, affordability, and the opportunity to interact with fellow residents.

CAN I SMOKE IN MY STUDIO? CAN I SMOKE IN MY HOUSING?

No. The studios and residence are smoke-free buildings.

ARE THE FACILITIES ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES?

Ramps and handicapped lifts provide access to those in wheelchairs.

CAN I SHIP ARTWORK OR SUPPLIES TO/FROM COOPER UNION?

Upon special request, artwork or supplies may be received by Cooper Union up to two weeks in advance of your residency. We are unable to store items prior to May 21st. During registration, residents will be given a list of contact names and addresses with guidelines as to whom to contact for various purposes, including shipping. Residents are responsible for arrangement and payment of shipping. All artwork and material must be removed from the studios by the residents upon the close of the Program. The Cooper Union cannot pay to ship or store artwork, materials, or other belongings.

WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE?

Each participant is provided with a semi-private studio, easel, a worktable, chair, materials cabinet, glass palette*, shatterproof jars*, paint rags and non-latex (Nitrile) gloves. Additional equipment is available for checkout, such as: tools, lights, slide projector, opaque projector, hotplates, and large-size stretcher bars.

WHAT ART SUPPLIES, IF ANY, ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE STUDIOS?

Solvents based paints containing toluene or xylene, such as car paint or sign paint, are banned. No containers of Turpentine larger than 16 oz. are permitted in the studios. We encourage use of a turpentine substitute/odorless mineral spirits and provide the brand, Gamsol*. The Cooper Union complies with Federal and State EPA and OSHA standards of health and safety. Special protocols exist for the use of aerosols and powdered (dry) pigments. Residents will be briefed on accepted methods of hazardous material storage and disposal of hazardous waste.

WILL TECHNICAL SUPPORT BE AVAILABLE?

Yes, there will be a technician on duty during studio hours.

WHERE CAN I BUY SUPPLIES? ARE THEY READILY AVAILABLE AND EASY TO FIND?

The Cooper Union is located within 5 minutes walking distance from several of the largest and most competitively priced art supply stores in the country, including Utrecht, The Art Store, Village Art Supply, and New York Central Art Supply.

WHAT IS THE RESIDENCY HALL LIKE?

Each room is a self-contained, air-conditioned unit with a bathroom and kitchenette to be shared with one other person. The kitchenette consists of a refrigerator, sink, gas burners, a microwave oven and limited cabinet space. Each room is a two-bedroom unit shared by two persons; each has his own bedroom measuring 11' x 13'.

WHAT KIND OF FURNITURE IS PROVIDED?

Each resident is provided with a twin bed, desk, wardrobe, and carrel-size bookshelf. Each unit has a kitchen table, chairs, microwave stand, refrigerator, house phone, and Venetian blinds. Units are not carpeted.

WHAT AMENITIES DOES THE BUILDING SUPPLY?

The building contains a laundry room equipped with coin operated washers and dryers, a study room equipped with drawing tables and desks, and the Menschel Common Room and Alumni Space for lounging, watching tv, and social gatherings. There is no common storage area in the building; residents must store their possessions in their apartments.

WHEN CAN I MOVE IN?

Residents check-in on Friday, June 13th. Detailed move-in instructions will be sent to you in May during the registration process. For security reasons, residents may not move in before June 13th.

MAY I SEND PERSONAL ITEMS TO THE RESIDENCE IN ADVANCE OF MOVING IN?

Due to lack of storage space, mail and boxes of personal belongings may not be sent in advance. Items received prior to June 13th will be returned to sender.

MAY I SEND ART SUPPLIES IN ADVANCE OF THE RESIDENCY?

Art supplies will be accepted up to two weeks before the start of the program. Items received prior will be returned to sender. WHAT ABOUT TELEPHONE SERVICE?

Each apartment has a house telephone in the common area. The house telephone has the capability of calling anywhere on campus and can accept outside calls. Outside calls cannot be made from these lines. You will be supplied with your telephone number when you check-in. Pay phones are located in the laundry room.

WHAT ITEMS DO I NEED TO BRING?

In addition to clothing and art supplies, you will need to bring blankets, personal hygiene products, clothes hangers, towels and an alarm clock. If you are planning on cooking, you should bring dishes, pots and pans, and utensils. The following items may contribute to a more comfortable room: area rugs, radios, answering machines, and non-halogen lamps. Non-University furniture is not allowed. No exceptions. K-Mart is located nearby at Fourth Avenue at 8th Street and is a great local source for many items you may need.

WHAT ITEMS SHOULD I NOT BRING?

Residence Hall policy forbids the use of halogen lamps, candles, incense, grills, convection ovens, hotplates, holiday lights, and other items that pose a fire hazard. Loft beds and pets are not allowed. We discourage residents from bringing bicycles, large screen TV's, and large stereos, since there is not adequate space to store these in the apartments. We advise that residents not bring drafting tables or drawing boards.

WHAT KIND OF SECURITY EXISTS IN THE BUILDING?

The Residence has a 24-hour security guard, video cameras, a biometric hand scanner, a card reader and an alarm system throughout the building. All visitors must show valid picture identification upon entering/signing in to the hall.

WHAT ARE THE RESIDENCE POLICIES?

Policies for the Residence will be distributed when you arrive. It is important to know in advance that guests and visitors will not be permitted into the Residence unless a resident signs them in and escorts them. You need advance authorization from your roommate and the Resident Manager and/or the Program Coordinator to have overnight guests. Your Resident Assistant will help you familiarize yourself with hall policies and fire evacuation procedures once you arrive at Cooper Union.

HOW IS THE BUILDING STAFFED?

There is a full-time Manager, a Facilities Manager and several Resident Assistants who live in the building. A particular Resident Assistant will be your primary contact for all housing concerns. S/he will be identified to you in advance of check-in.

IS THERE CABLE TELEVISION SERVICE?

You may call Time/Warner Cable at 212 674-9100 to set up service in your apartment after you move in. Basic Cable is provided in the common lounge; it does not include HBO, Showtime, and the like.

IS THERE COOPER UNION INTERNET SERVICE?

You can access the Internet from the computers in the college library or by bringing your own laptop. Additional accommodations may be made available, as necessary.

WHAT'S THE NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE?

The East Village is an extremely exciting area full of a wide variety of ethnically diverse restaurants, and charming boutiques. There are many affordable places to eat and shop for groceries, and the Union Square Greenmarket is a five-minute walk from campus. There are several other colleges nearby, which creates a vibrant and well-patrolled neighborhood.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO LIVE IN THE RESIDENCE?

The cost is $1,200 for a 4-week stay. All utilities included (a/c & heat).

CAN I STAY IN THE RESIDENCY FOR LESS THAN 4 WEEKS?

Residents are accepted into the residency only for a 4 week period--the full duration of the program.

All residents are issued an electronic keycard which provides entry into his/her apartment and in to the hall after hours (2AM-7AM).
