Mine are fluid tactile images, a sensuality due in part to the immediacy and quick rhythm of the instant developing process of Polaroid film and the transformative affects inherent in digital imaging output. Each image evokes shifting layers, both through my own physical contortions, gestures, and movements as subject, and through my directorial use of exposure techniques. As both the principal actor and director in these scenes, I simultaneously plan and actualize a series of acute psychological states. I seek to move beyond the current trends in self-portraiture, not only commenting on superficial cultural stereotypes and gender identity, but also examining the duality of sexual desire and self-validation. My object is to expand the paradigm of what it means to be other, specifically a lesbian in the 1990s, through a creative examination of the complex layers of sexuality, transgender, desire, and memory.
