Stephen Marc makes autobiographical montages combining family snapshots, antique photographs, and images from his own extensive body of photographic work. The images of the artist and of tile, textile, and wrought-iron patterns all speak to the artist in a language of “mythic images that combine a sense of implied narrative with the presence of ritual.” The works are an enigmatic record of the artist’s coming to terms with new media as well as a cryptic document of his constant negotiation of his African-American identity.
