Christopher Janney infiltrates public spaces with audio works that operate at the intersection of the ambient and the interactive. The passerby who inadvertently triggers a cascade of sounds from one of Janney’s works becomes a sudden and keen observer of his or her surroundings. The perceptual play that follows this activation crates a space for inward reflection and social interaction. The original installation, Soundstair ©1978 is a permanent piece in the Boston Museum of Science. The installation at Cooper Union ©1997 has been developed specifically for the site including a new sound score.
