Ink and acrylic on linen

71x177"

Painting to at once re-embody and metaphorize the act of seeing, Tishan Hsu builds up fused expanses of color that occasionally give way to corporeal forms. Working with an array of traditional and new media, Hsu renders flesh and its surrogates -- paper, cloth, the sculptural form -- into painted surfaces that stretch elusively beyond the field of vision and oscillate evasively under close inspection.
