SCOTT RICHTER "Bedeutungsschwer," oil paint, medium, palette table, 56" x 42" x 30", 1999 Scott Richter teaches Basic Drawing in the Foundation Program at the Cooper Union School of Art. "When discussing my work, I'm often asked whether it is painting or sculpture. Even though the pieces have sculptural elements, in fact, my interests are not sculptural. And while I am very interested in painting, these are not paintings. They are, however, about painting...the process, and not the product. Someone once said to me that it was like getting into a car, with no destination…one focuses on very different aspects of the ride...which I think is true. Color is at issue, but the paint never leaves the palette...the studio day ends. Each piece comments on the repetitious nature of painting. While subjects and titles are carefully considered, ultimately it is the metaphor that serves the piece. There is some irony here, and that is, that while trying hard to avoid the product, I end up with one." Richter has had numerous one-person exhibitions in New York at Elizabeth Harris Gallery, Curt Marcus Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery and P.S. 1, with others in Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis and elsewhere in the U.S. His work has been included in group exhibitions at Exit Art, Dumbo Arts Center, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, the Boston Center for Contemporary Art, the DeCordova Museum, the Tang Museum at Skidmore College, the Neuberger Museum at SUNY/Purchase, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston and the Museo de arte Contemporano in Mexico City. Richter has been awarded individual artist's fellowships in painting and sculpture from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Connecticut Council for the Arts and the Englehard Foundation. | BACK | |
