JAMES CRAIG Cover, Designing With Type, James Craig, Susan E. Meyer, William Bevington, Watson-Guptill Publications, copyright 1999 James Craig is the author of a number of books on graphic design and typography. Among the better known titles are Designing with Type: A Basic Course in Typography, Production for the Graphic Designer, Thirty Centuries of Graphic Design, and Graphic Design Career Guide. He teaches typography at the Cooper Union School of Art. "My major interest in graphic design education has always been teaching typography. I believe typography is one of the student's most important subjects. Many design subjects, while interesting and challenging, are not always intrinsic to every assignment. This is not the case with typography; there are many occasions when type is the only means of creating a design or communicating a message." Craig was born in Montreal, Canada and studied fine arts in Montreal and Paris before immigrating to the United States in 1957. He received his BFA from The Cooper Union and a MFA from Yale University in 1965. For over twenty-five years, he was the Design Director at Watson-Guptill Publications and was involved in the design and publication of many of the major graphic design annuals. He is presently a member of the New York Art Directors Club, Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), Type Directors Club (TDC), Typophiles, and a past member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). Craig is presently working on a web site devoted to the art and appreciation of typography (see link below) created originally as a supplement to Designing with Type for his Cooper Union students. It has grown to include contributions from influential educators and designers from major design schools around the world and now reaches a worldwide audience, offering a unique typographic resource for students, educators, and professionals. http://www.designingwithtype.com | BACK | |
