International Students

Please read the following instructions for applying to The Cooper Union carefully.

Requirements for Applying

  1. International students do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
  2. All applicants to The Cooper Union must live in the United States or its possessions or territories and must apply from a domestic address. Applicants are required to use a United States mailing address. All information related to the application will be sent to the United States mailing address.
  3. International students must complete the section on The Cooper Union formal application about type of visa held.
  4. International students are not eligible for Federal or State Financial Aid.
  5. International applicants whose native language is not English and who have not graduated from a secondary school in the United States are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to provide evidence of English proficiency. A minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper format), 250 (computer format) or 100 (internet-based format) is required.
  6. All applicants to The Cooper Union are required to submit scores from the SAT exam (www.collegeboard.com) or ACT exam (www.act.org).
  7. Make sure the same form of your name is used on your application and test scores. This should be identical to the name on your passport.
  8. All high school and college transcripts must be translated into English and sent to The Cooper Union.
  9. Students on visas (those who are noncitizens or who are not permanent residents) who are accepted to The Cooper Union will be required to file a Certificate of Finances with the Office of Admissions and Records prior to their first registration. The Certificate of Finances must certify that students meet the minimum financial support requirements for resident students. Click here for our student budget guide.
