Florian Meier
Florian Meier is a Professional Engineer and Associate Director with Knippers Helbig, where he is leading the New York office.
Florian was trained at the Technical University of Munich with a focus on computational formfinding methods and structural optimization at the chair of structural analysis, Prof. Bletzinger, where he was a research assistant.
Florian has experience in a variety of materials and innovative fabrication technologies, with an emphasis on complex structures and sustainable building concepts, such as mass timber. Among other projects, his portfolio includes the granite stone vault of the Sean Collier Memorial in Cambridge (Höweler + Yoon Architecture) and the 150 ft. spanning steel and glass dome of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles (Renzo Piano Building Workshop).
He has authored numerous articles and papers about his work for peer-reviewed magazines and international research conferences (IASS, IABSE, fib, AAG) and has contributed twice to the book series “Ingenieurbaukunst” (engl. “Structural Art”, editions 2020 and 2022).
Besides co-teaching the course “Structures II” at Cooper Union, Florian is frequently serving as a lecturer, design critique or structural consultant at Princeton University, Jefferson University, RPI, Technical University of Munich, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he is co-teaching the course “Material and Structural Intelligence” at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design.
